Kitten killed in the name of fine arts
--------------------------------------
Hypocritical Saint (Álszent, hungarian experimental motion picture, currently w/o IMDB page) presented at 38th Hungarian Film Week shows explicitly the suffocation of a cat. Torture of an animal - or is it fine art? The jury denies any knowledge of the shooting conditions of the film about cult activist, even while in february it was no sort of secret.
Best Experimental Film was awarded to Hypocritical Saint directed by "Nicolaus MYSLICKI", a motion picture, that shows the suffocation and agony of a cat for more than two minutes. The scene is not a trickery, the cat actually dies after long pains and suffering, as hungarian internet movie portal Filmpont.hu states.
Animal abuse in sect movie
--------------------------
The movie, depicting a sect leader seeking the way of God, won the award for being outrageous in shooting and in storyboard, and for depicting a sacral topic in unconventional ways.
Director and dramatist Zoltan TOEPLER (using pen name Nickolaus MYSLICKI) admitted, that the animal died during the shot, while he was defending with the cat was sick, and was awaiting mercy killing on the next day.
By Animal Protection and Tolerance Act of 2004 this is serious animal abuse, as "one hurting and abusing vertebrate animal causelessly or shows mistreatment leading to injury or death is guilty and should be punished with 2 years of gaol, public utility work or fine". The director reasons with the cat being sentenced to mercy killing, but this should be done only by qualified veterinarian with analgetic methods, controlled by Union law.
Storm in a glass of water?
--------------------------
Index.hu tried to contact personnel related to the case, to clarify if the cat was killed or not and it is only a trick shot.
Firstly the creator, Toepler was contacted on phone, who told the reporters not to care about the case and leave him alone. Next Peter TÍMÁR director was contacted, who was member and president of the Jury of Experimental and Short Films. Tímár, after hearing the subject of the call, told he's driving at the moment and should be called back in ten minutes. After that, he turned off his cellphone, not letting know the reporters his esteem on the case.
Camera-man and director, professor of the Film-theory department of ELTE BTK Laszlo HARTAI told the media-effect of the motion picture "is a storm in a glass of water", the hungarian press should be talking about more important matters, like the renewal of hungarian movie arts.
Hartai told, he had and has no knowledge of the murder and/or any animal abuse in the film. "As a member of the jury, my duty was not to decide about crimes but to measure aesthetical values of a movie." - stated Hartai, who had no concerns about what we saw is cleary a trick shot, as one does not actually believes the contents of a fictional movie. "But, of course I disapprove the killing of that animal." - clarified his standpoint the jury member.
They've known, it was killed
----------------------------
Unknown commenter, asking for anonimity, under the nickname 'kotzka' stated, the animal was abused and killed, as the jury had concerns about the film, and the director stated, that the cat died during the shoot. Details of the sickness and euthanasy was also used as a defense line during the rehearsal.
Thing stated in the comment were affirmed by the independent critique of the Pesti Est, that also mentions as about the cat, as about the defence of the director. The critique states "the story was received so hardly, that more left the press screening of the film".
Critique of Filmpont.hu tells also the following:
"Anyways, who could've awarded anything to a movie of this sort? I've seen it, from the beginning to the end. Yea' it contains outrageous, new elements, good shots, thinking moments. It has a half-armed man, gerontophile relationships, a gay pair with hanging balls, etc. - It's just like the director collected everything "that would probably embarass the viewers" into a big box. But he also knew, he was working with trained experts - so he needed a special weapon, an "effect, to stiffen up nerves". But it was more than enough. Etically, morally, every possible way. Static camera, showing all the pain and agony of a two minutes long cry for help. Selfish, irresponsible act. The cat did not even try to crawl the hand holding it - we can see it trusts that very hand."
